Katie’s educational background is rooted in the life sciences. Through her coursework and research, she gained experience with microbiology, chemical synthesis, assay development, fluorescence imaging, cancer biology, and pharmacodynamics. Her dissertation work focused on developing and applying chemical tools to investigate enzyme activity in both dormant and actively replicating M. tuberculosis, the pathogen that causes tuberculosis. Enzymes that remain active in the dormant bacteria may provide novel and effective drug targets.
An interest in technical writing and her lifelong love of learning led Katie to pursue a career in intellectual property law upon completing her doctorate. Before joining FIG. 1, Katie worked at McCoy Russell LLP, where she prepared and prosecuted patent applications for diverse technologies related to the automotive industry, medical devices, medical imaging, and more. Her experience has given her broad exposure to both software-related technologies and mechanical technologies.
As a senior technical specialist at FIG. 1, Katie prepares and prosecutes patent applications in a variety of technology areas. She enjoys crafting thorough yet readable patent applications that layer effective prosecution strategies with technical aspects of the inventors’ innovations.
In her free time, Katie is an abstract artist. She also enjoys live music, spending time with her family (including her two cats), and exploring the many parks and wildlife areas near her home in Portland, OR.
