Scott has a wealth of experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device fields. He has spent 15+ years working for Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation and Alcon Corporation with 8 of those years heading the ophthalmology and pharmaceutical franchises of those companies. He specializes in helping clients analyze and maximize drug and product exclusivity as he guides them through the complex interplay between patents, regulatory exclusivities, and trade secrets. He has deep experience in small molecules, biologics, drug delivery, cell & gene therapies, and medical devices. He also has extensive experience across a spectrum of additional technologies including: compositions of matter; polymer and material science; automotive technologies and mechanical arts.

Scott knows that pharmaceutical IP law requires a full understanding of how a complex body of patent law and a complex body of regulatory exclusivities apply to a chosen pharmaceutical technology. He also understands that application of the law and exclusivities can change as that technology evolves. As such, achieving the most desirable exclusivity and maximizing product value requires that IP strategies begin early in development and get revisited throughout the clinical development and life of a product. Scott has successfully developed and executed these strategies throughout all the various stages of pharmaceutical development and has done so for a wide variety of pharmaceutical technologies.

Scott’s Philosophy - I believe that IP attorneys achieve their best results when they partner very closely with their clients, including R&D, clinical, regulatory, and the various business functions. IP attorneys consistently need to explain complex IP concepts so that their clients sufficiently understand the IP risks and advantages associated with any given situation. I have developed a keen ability to read my clients so that I can explain complex IP concepts at a level they will understand. I see this explanation, however, as only a starting point for properly partnering with my clients. To truly partner with my clients, I also carefully listen to them and gain a deep understanding of their goals for the business. This understanding then allows me to provide them with the best possible path to achieve those goals. During this process, I aim to bring energy and personality to interactions with my clients so that they want me to be in the room when decisions are being made.

In his free time, Scott enjoys golf, boating, and exercise. Scott is married and has a son and two daughters. He and his wife try to walk their two dogs daily.
